Boss Breakdown: Cthulhu
about 6 years ago – Wed, Sep 05, 2018 at 10:26:21 AM

Character Intro

.

Cthulhu has been plotting for millennia from the Void, awaiting an opportunity to escape to the corporeal world and conquer the minds of those who dare to oppose him, feeding the rest to his zombie army. Cthulhu plays the long game, using effects to control the early game while building resources towards an insurmountable late-game engine.

Play Style

Cthulhu is all about playing Effects. The few upgrades that Cthulhu has power up his upgrades, make them cheaper, or otherwise interact with them. Cthulhu’s game plan is to prolong the game by using effects to slow his opponents down while playing upgrades to generate more and more advantage until his opponents are ground to dust beneath his might.

.

Base Abilities

Cthulhu’s Scheme ability allows him to discard a card to draw a new card. With the high density of powerful effects in Cthulhu’s deck, it doesn’t take too much scheming to find the perfect card for any situation. Cthulhu’s ultimate, Omniscience, allows him to search his deck or discard pile for any effect and play it for free, giving Cthulhu full access to his vast arsenal of Effects.

.

Deck Breakdown - Key Cards

Cthulhu’s signature card is Forbidden Tomb. Forbidden Tomb makes a zombie any time you play an effect, which adds up to a lot of free zombies for Cthulhu if it goes unchecked.

The Depths is one of Cthulhu’s most important effects. It allows him to get back an Effect from his discard pile, which means rebuying Effects important to a particular matchup, or getting back expensive effects discarded to Scheme.

Zap is the main enabler of many of Cthulhu’s awesome plays. It is a zero cost effect that destroys a minion. Since it costs zero, it will trigger your Forbidden Tomb or any other Upgrades that want you to play effects, as well as being easy to get back and replay with cards like The Depths.

Cthulhu is all about playing effects and slowing down opponents and the effect that is most effective at making sure your opponent doesn’t overwhelm you is Madness. It makes your opponent roll 2 less dice on their next turn, giving you the time you need to set up your defenses.

In order to keep playing effects while also deploying upgrades necessary to scale into the late game, Cthulhu needs lots of crystals. That’s where Dark Ritual comes in. It is an upgrade that gives Cthulhu a crystal every turn, maintains a steady income.

Arena Mode Role

In Arena mode, Cthulhu plays as a support in the early game, slowing down opponents by destroying minions and manipulating their movement and dice. Later in the game, once Cthulhu gets his upgrades online, he can start to generate enough resources to become a team’s major damage dealer.

Captain Boat finds his Bounty

We have some great news! As early as our development and playtesting stages, retailers and local distributors who we met at tradeshows and conventions were interested in carrying Battle Bosses. After showing these distributors and retailers how much Battle Bosses has evolved, many of them have asked if they could carry Battle Bosses on their shelves. In order to ensure our backers also benefit from their interest in our game, we are introducing our Captain's Bounty tier. This tier includes 6 Case Packs of individually boxed bosses, equivalent set of each add-on, and unlocked stretch goals.

Building a Battle Bosses community is very important to us at Kess and making sure that local game stores everywhere have an easy way to keep ordering Battle Bosses while supporting us is a great way to ensure the longevity of the community. And of course, with their help we can head towards unlocking some awesome stretch goals!

Boss Breakdown: Ryu
about 6 years ago – Tue, Aug 28, 2018 at 11:39:21 AM

Character Intro

Ryu, Dragon Goddess, Shogun of the Eastern Provinces commands an army of highly trained Samurai, using her keen sense of strategy to lay waste to enemies through clever tactics and careful positioning of troops. She spreads her Samurai throughout the battlefield, controlling as much territory as possible, growing stronger with each tile she claims.

Play Style

Ryu has many Promotion cards that upgrade her Samurai, allowing them to become the deadliest minions in the game. Ryu typically sits back in the early game and begins spreading out her Samurai to control as much territory as possible, upgrading them over time in preparation for a coordinated strike on her enemies.

.

Base abilities

Ryu can protect her Samurai by giving them Bushido tokens with Bestow, making sure that they survive as long as possible so she can continue to reap the rewards of her conquests. Ryu’s ultimate ability, Celestial Katana, allows her to strike an enemy boss for each space she controls, rewarding careful positioning of Samurai around the board.

.

Deck Breakdown - Key Cards

Ryu’s signature card is Dragon Shogun. It allows her to place Samurai in spaces adjacent to her instead of her space, allowing her to spread out her Samurai more quickly and efficiently.

.

Meditation allows Ryu to search her deck for any Promotion in her deck and put it into her hand. Samurai have many potential promotions and being able to find the perfect one for a given scenario can make the difference between winning and losing.

.

Sacred Bushido is definitely a promotion to keep in mind if you are searching with Meditation. It gives the first Samurai you make each turn a Bushido token, and having more durable Samurai every turn without paying any more for them makes it very easy to amass the Samurai army that Ryu is always trying to rally.

.

Once Ryu has filled up the board with Samurai and gets her enemy on the back foot, a timely Lightning Strike can put the game out of reach for an unsuspecting enemy. It allows Ryu to destroy all enemy minions in a space up to two spaces away from her and move into that space, clearing the way for Ryu to brawl an enemy boss and closing the gap.

.

Once Ryu decided to turn the corner and get aggressive on an opponent, her spread out Samurai might have trouble backing her up if things start to go awry. Luckily, Bajutsu moves each Samurai 2 spaces, allowing them to quickly traverse the board and converge on enemies.

Arena Mode Role

In Arena mode, Ryu clogs up the battlefield with hard to kill Samurai, making her a great defensive asset that will give opponents nightmares if they are trying to assault objectives that Ryu is near.

Boss Breakdown: Captain Boat
about 6 years ago – Sat, Aug 25, 2018 at 01:46:08 PM

Character Intro

The Scourge of the 13 depths. Part Captain! Part Boat! With a cannon for an arm and an eye patch for a sail, no one is safe while the Captain is out at sea. Captain Boat loves nothing more than treasure. He hoards crystals to pay off his mercenary crew while traversing the board to uncover Chest tokens buried by his opponents.

Play Style

Captain Boat is a very mobile boss, and that mobility is best used finding and cashing in chest tokens. Captain Boat has the ability to spend an energy to have his opponent place a chest on the board in an empty space of their choice. Captain Boat then has Treasure cards that allow him or a pirate to cash in chests for rewards.

.

Base Abilities

Captain Boat’s basic abilities are Bounty, which allows him to discard a card to get a crystal, and his ultimate Treasure Trove, which lets him get 8 crystals! Captain Boat also has a 3rd unique ability, which is the one that forces opponents to place chests.

Deck Breakdown - Key Cards

Captain Boat’s key card is Treasure Map. It allows you to search your deck for a treasure card and put it into your hand. Getting a Treasure card ASAP is important for Captain Boat and being able to choose which one you get is even better.

Mutiny is another of Captain Boat’s important cards. At the beginning of each of his turns, Mutiny deals a damage to whichever boss has the least crystals. Luckily, Captain Boat has the tools to make sure he stays on top of the crystal race.

The most efficient way Captain Boat can stay ahead in crystals is Steal. It’s a zero-cost effect that allows Captain Boat to steal a crystal from an opponent.

In order to pick up all these treasures lying about, Captain Boat has got to move round. The card that does that most efficiently is Silk Sails. It costs 1 crystal, and lets you move a unit 1 space for free every turn as long as you have more crystals than each opponent.

Arena Mode Role

In Arena mode, Captain Boat takes on a supporting role since his allies can open the Chests as well, Captain Boat places them around for his teammates to grab, while hoarding crystals to set up his payoff cards in the late game.

Boss Breakdown: Grakthar
about 6 years ago – Thu, Aug 23, 2018 at 09:55:27 PM

Grakthar is the bully of Battle Bosses. He stomps around the battlefield, taking whatever he pleases, and smashing everything and everyone in his way with his greedy goblin cohort following in his wake, looting the wreckage of his conquests.

Play Style

Grakthar wants to get in the opponent’s face and beat them in direct melee combat before they know what hit them.

.

Base Abilities

One of the ways Grakthar is able to excel at close range is with his base ability to spend energy to damage an opposing boss in his space. This allows Grakthar to keep up pressure on his enemies health even when low on crystals. Your opponent will be the one low on crystals when you unleash Grakthar’s ultimate ability, Rampage, which destroys all of an enemy’s crystals and deals damage to them for each one!

Deck Breakdown - Key Cards

Grakthar’s signature card is Big Machete. When brawling enemy bosses, it allows him to deal an extra damage, which is an important part of Grakthar’s strategy of directly fighting enemy bosses.

All this fighting with enemy bosses is bound to get Grakthar damaged. To make sure there’s no way the enemy can take out Grakthar first, Grakthar always wants to have some Meat handy to heal back up.

Bully is one of Grakthar’s main sources of crystals. You get a crystal each time you move into your opponent’s space, which should happen all time time once your opponent is on the run!

Grakthar doesn’t have any time to wait for his goblins to catch up when he’s rushing into battle, but fortunately, he’s got the Backpack card, so he can carry his diminutive friends with him into battle with ease. When Grakthar has Backpack, he gets to move any goblins in his space for free whenever he moves!

If there’s anything Grakthar lives other than crushing his enemies, it’s hearing the adoration of his fans. When he has the cheering squad upgrade, he can move 1 space for each of his goblins in play.

Arena Mode Role

In Arena mode, Grakthar’s in-your-face playstyle allows him to act as a team’s main damage dealer. Grakthar will typically be on the front lines of battle, taking out enemy bosses or neutral minions while his team uses their resources to finish off Grakthar’s prey or keep enemy bosses from teaming up on him.

If aggressive gameplay is how you get things done, Grakthar is the Boss that helps you get in your opponent's face, then hit them hard.
